Pros: almost unlimited disc, local support. (in Lowell MA),shell, Software Libre. Personal email and webspace for every member of your organization, backups, IMAP. Additional services include, Cheap reliable domain registration.

Cons: No control panel.

Dreamhost dreamhost.org

Pro: Many services and features, Nice control panel. People who didn't like our (CSL) service left us for dreamhost and liked them better. (there were also political issues). Some of our group are using dreamhost for sites that are too political for the university.

Con: One other person used the word "sucks" to discribe Dreamhost. Requires 501c3 status

Grassroots.org grassroots.org

Pro: Good record finding volunteer web designers to work on your site. Standard hosting features (100MB storage, 2GB bandwidth, 5 mailboxes) with discounted, low cost upgrades to professional package (500MB, 50GB, unlimited mailboxes, Miva Merchant).

Con:Small banner required, must be 501c3, must have registered domain

riseup.net riseup.net

Pro: Riseup has solid tech skills, they publish info for use by other people seeking to administer servers. They created backup-ninja

Con: Maybe restricted to left leaning groups (?), no php or CGI

ThinkHost.com thinkhost.com

Pro: Wind and solar powered. Control panel. Don't require 501c3 status. Standard mysql,php, perl. Offers ssh. Generator backed power.

Con: Must be "progressive" Must be willing to put a banner and link on your pages back to them.

Groups charging for services

Some folks aren't comfortable getting things without paying.

Pro: If the folks on Modwest are as helpful to their paying customers as they are to their competitors on the debian-isp listserv, they are pretty helpful.

Con: There is a charge.
